To the editor:

The Hanover Police Department is excited to announce a new opportunity to improve our community.

On Nov. 18, 2013, the Hanover Town Council granted me the opportunity to reach out to the members of our community to ask for your support. We are asking for your help with raising the funds to begin our department's first K9 unit.

With the addition of a trained and nationally certified dual purpose police service dog to our department, I feel that we can continue to make Hanover and the surrounding area a safer place to live and raise a family.

At the end of our training. a dual purpose K9 will be able to assist officers in the following areas: location of drugs/narcotics in vehicle and building searches, criminal apprehension and tracking (both criminals and others that are lost and in danger), handler protection, and for informational programs that help build community relations.

It is with the above in mind that we ask for your support. To make our dream of starting our K9 unit a reality, we must first develop the necessary funds. With a goal of $20,000, I believe that it is important for the community to understand what their donations will fund. The following items must be purchased to start our program: trained dual purpose police K9, basic K9 handler course and certifications, necessary equipment for the dog, ballistic K9 vest, vehicle insert design for transport of a police working dog and the construction of a kennel for the K9's housing.

If you are able to support our program in any way, all donation amounts are appreciated. Donations can be made in any manner and checks should be made out to the Hanover Police Department K9 Fund to ensure that your donation is placed in the proper account. Donations are tax deductible; therefore, please provide our department with your name, address and phone number and we will ensure that you receive a proper receipt for documentation.

Please contact our department at (812) 866-2131, ext. 32 with any questions you may have about donations or information regarding the development of our K9 unit. I am accessible at

Thank you, and remember we cannot do this without your support!
