Meals program a success

To the editor:
I want to send out a huge thank you to the volunteers who helped with the Summer Meals for Kids program. The program, run by Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana in cooperation with the local Clearinghouse and Southwestern and Madison School districts, served 4,730 free meals to children ages 1 to 18 this summer.
The program was offered because more than 50 percent of the children in Jefferson County depend on free or reduced lunches to meet their nutritional needs during the school year. When summer comes, they lose access to school meals and this puts a greater financial burden on families that are already struggling. So, to help those families, every weekday this summer, free lunches were taken out into the Hanover and Madison communities on minibuses provided by the school districts.
Thanks to the following for their time and effort: Hanover United Methodist Church, Hanover Presbyterian Church, River Valley Community Church, Hanover Baptist Church, Hanover College, Southwestern teachers, Sandstone Industries, Family Connections, MainSource Bank, Kiwanis, Madison First Christian Church, Republican Women's Club, Girls, Inc., LifeSpring, United Way, Centerstone, Madison Presbyterian Church, Rotary, One Community One Family, First Assembly of God Church and IKE.
I am proud to live in a community where so many people are willing to put their concern for their neighbors into action and help with a program like this.
