Join in honoring WWII veterans at Saturday ceremony
Friday, August 23, 2013 11:00 AM
Area residents have an opportunity Saturday to honor two World War II Marine Corps veterans.
A military escort will carry the remains of Pfc. Manley Winkley and his nephew Cpl. Lyman Winkley from a central Indiana funeral home to the Veterans' Cemetery in Madison.
It would be a fitting tribute to the men and their families if people would line the route the procession will follow.
Indiana State Police and local police in Brown, Bartholomew, Jennings, and Jefferson counties will assist the Patriot Guard Riders with the escort.
Manley Winkley died during the World War II Battle of Tarawa. His remains buried on the island of Betio were recently identified. Lyman Winkley served in World War II and the Korean War.
The escort will leave a Nashville funeral home at 11 a.m. Saturday and follow Indiana Routes 135, 46 and 7 before arriving at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison at 1 p.m. Fire and police departments will line the streets to help escort the men to their final resting place. The public is asked to line Lanier Drive as a tribute.
