May is Historic Preservation Month and communities, large and small, will take the time to celebrate history and historic places.

This year's theme is "See! Save! Celebrate!" three things Madison and its residents have done for many years.

Locally, this year's celebration shines a spotlight on our community's historic locations. Most of us know about those places, and more and more visitors are beginning to understand Madison's place in Indiana's and the nation's history.

Mayor Damon Welch issued a proclamation at Tuesday's City Council meeting recognizing this special month and its significance to Madison, noting that Madison has the largest and one of the most important historic districts in Indiana.

The proclamation also noted that "historic preservation encourages community reinvestment, saving valuable natural and cultural resources and community infrastructure, and promoting socially, culturally, and economically rich communities."

When the talk turns to historic preservation, Madison can boast about its leadership role. We do, indeed, have much to "See! Save! and Celebrate!"
