Marine Corps Pfc. Amber R. Wood, daughter of Yvonne L. Wood of Paris Crossing, earned the title of Marine after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S. C. Wood is a 2012 graduate of Jennings County High School of North Vernon.
For 13 weeks, Wood stayed committed during some of the world's most demanding entry-level military training in order to be transformed from civilian to Marine. Training subjects included close-order drill, marksmanship with an M-16A4 rifle, physical fitness, martial arts, swimming, military history, customs and courtesies.
One week prior to graduation, Wood endured The Crucible, a 54-hour final test of recruits. Upon completion, recruits are presented the Marine Corps emblem and called Marines for the first time.
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class James A. Goodknight, a 2008 graduate of Madison Consolidated High School recently reported for duty aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Gettysburg, homeported in Mayport, Fla. Goodknight joined the Navy in February 2011.
