Canaan Community Academy students hopped their way to more than $1,000 in donations for the American Heart Association on Friday during a Jump Rope for Heart event. From 1 to 3 p.m., students rotated through different stations in the school gymnasium, jumping in relays, in groups with long ropes or on their own in a free-style. Substitute teacher Laverne Kelley entertained the kids with some nifty moves of her own. Jump Rope for Heart, and the sister basketball program Hoops for Heart, are national education and fundraising events sponsored by the American Heart Association and the Society of Health and Physical Educators. Leading up to the event, students are encouraged to fundraise for special prizes through the program and at school.
