Shawe, Switzerland Co. compete at Academic Super Bowl Invitational in Batesville

Teams from Shawe Memorial Junior Senior High School and Switzerland County High School attended the 2017 Academic Super Bowl Senior Division Invitational on Feb. 27 in Batesville.
Other regional high schools competing included: Batesville, Jac-Cen-Del, South Ripley, Rising Sun, South Dearborn, East Central, Milan, Franklin County, Trinity Lutheran, Rushville and Greensburg.
Competition covered six categories with 25 questions each with each area relating to this year’s them of the French revolution. The six categories include math, social studies, science, fine arts, English and interdisciplinary.
Schools are usually divided into classes based on their size, with Switzerland County in Class 3 and Shawe in Class 4. However, scores at the Batesville event were not divided by class.
Shawe’s English team placed first among all schools, the science team placed third overall and the math team also placed third.
English team members included captain Katie Stuart, Logan Lainhart, Summer Martin and Mackenzie Deppe. The team is coached by English teacher Andie Martin.
Science team members included captain Aaron Petersen, Yongseok Lee, Matt Binzer, Megan Hesse, Trinity Jones, Bailee Brandon, Devin Russell, Bryan Avalos, Lydia Goebel and Ellen Frede. The team is coached by chemistry teacher Maria Armbrecht.
Math team members included captain Yongseok Lee, Blaise Lin, Julie Lee, Bryan Avalos, Logan Lainhart, Nate Pawlak and Alex Guo. The team is coached by retired math teacher Teresa Torline.
Fine arts team members included Jacob Binzer, Joey Belt, Kristin Snodgrass, Makayla Christian, Emma Belt, Keefer Hagan, Kelly Hesse, Cole Thorpe, and Savannah Apel. The team is coached by band teacher Bill Gordon and retired art teacher Carole Williams.
Social studies team members included Joel Carrillo, Megan Hill, Ryan Storm, Mackenzie Ott, Eric Cooper and Sami Legeza. The team is coached by social studies teacher Jenny Nigg.
The interdisciplinary team included captain Aaron Petersen, Yongseok Lee, Joey Belt, Katie Stuart, Joel Carrillo, Logan Lainhart, Megan Hesse, Jacob Binzer, and Megan Hill.
Switzerland County’s fine arts team placed second overall with 15 points out of 25, just one point behind the top finisher.
Considering class scores, Switzerland County teams scored in the top three of all categories.
Competing students included: Brandon Bennett, Jody Breeck, Cora Castle, Kim Cutter, Garrett Demaree, Allison Detmer, Emma Dornbusch, Hailey Dornbusch, Trey Gray, Emma Lockwood, Lily Lockwood, Kayla Scranton, Brianna Vinup, Kaylen Whitaker and Sam White.
Coaches are Donna Baker, fine arts; Valerie Smith and Emily Schroeder, science; Barry Smith, math; Michelle White, social studies; and Janet Hendricks, English.
