Steve David has announced his resignation as Chairman of H1 Unlimited, effective immediately.
Steve David said he will continued to work with H1 to find a new chairman and “build upon the promises of the future.”
David, the long-time veteran hydroplane pilot, initially made the announcement at the awards ceremony after the season finale race at San Diego on Sunday and then followed that up with a post on his Facebook page early Monday morning.
In the post, David said although he felt like there was still work to be done, it was time for him to move on.
“Two years ago I was asked to lead H1. I committed to restore their financial position, clean up the balance sheet, increase fan engagement, establish new race sites, and create a more collaborative environment amongst our stakeholders,” David wrote. “I did my best, yet there is more to do. So yesterday at San Diego where I retired from driving four years ago, I stepped down as Chairman.
“I’ll work with H1 to find a new leader to hand off the baton and build upon the promises of the future. I truly believe the sport is on track for a return to significance in the motorsports world.”
David made his Unlimited debut as a driver in 1988 winning Rookie of the Year honors and won three races while driving Jim Harvey’s U-2 Miss T-Plus boat in the 1990s.
His greatest fame came however when he joined the Miss Madison Racing Team in 2001. During a 13-year span with the team, David steered the Oh Boy! Oberto hydroplane to 15 wins, four National High Points titles and six Driver’s Championships. His 18 career wins are sixth on the all-time list.
David announced his retirement from driving at San Diego just prior to the 2013 race and spent one year away from the sport before being summoned back in 2014 following the resignation of Sam Cole, also just prior to the San Diego race.
“The book of life has many chapters, and if we don’t turn the page, we’ll miss experiencing all that God has readied for us,” David said. “Today, Sabrina and I begin that next chapter. We both hope your lives will once again meet us on the new journey.”
No timetable for naming a new chairman has been announced by H1.
