After four long months of waiting, the 2012 Air National Guard H1 Unlimited racing season will finally come to an end this weekend in Doha, Qatar.
Steve David and the U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison enter the Oryx Cup UIM World Championship with a commanding 652-point lead in the National High Points race and an eye toward winning their fourth championship in five years.
But surviving the heavy salt water of Doha Bay, not to mention the extended schedule and tight field, isn't merely a matter of just showing up. The Miss Madison team will have to be at its best to take home the title.
"All of us on team Oberto look forward to Doha and regaining U-1 and winning the Oryx Cup UIM World Championship," David said. "We're cognizant that our competitors have the same goal for their teams as well.
"I'm thinking this may be the most competitive event of the entire season," David added. "Think about it, on the table is the team National Championship, the Driver Championship and the World Championship. That's a heck of a goal!"
David is in position to win his sixth driver's title in the past eight years thanks to a ruling that went in his team's favor. After claiming victory at San Diego in September, H1 officials determined that the Oh Boy! Oberto failed the post-race inspection and was disqualified.
The team appealed and on Halloween the appeal was accepted giving David his 16th-career win and the 18th for the Miss Madison Racing team.
It also means that David leads chief rival and defending series champion Dave Villwock by 652 points in both the team and driver races. Villwock, who will be steering the locally-sponsored U-1 Spirit of Qatar 96, won the team's third national title a year ago.
Jimmy Shane sits third in the standings aboard the U-5 Graham Trucking, 824 points back of David. Shane is the only other driver mathematically capable of winning the crown.
Ted Porter, who owns Shane's U-5 entry, has had quite a bit of success in Doha, winning two of the three races held on Doha Bay including last year when Scott Liddycoat picked up his first career-win.
Liddycoat, who now drives for the USA Racing Partners team, will miss the race as the team works to repair the U-88 entry. In its place will be Brian Perkins and the Go Fast Turn Left Team which will wear the 88 number.
Six other entrants are in the Middle East for the race. They are: Jon Zimmerman, U-9 Jones Racing; J. Michael Kelly, U-37 Miss Beacon Plumbing; Ryan Mallow, U-100 Leland Unlimited; Tom Thompson, U-11 Miss Peters & May; Kip Brown, U-17 Miss Red Dot; and Mark Evans, U-57 Evans Brothers Racing. Only the top 10 in points make the trip to Doha.
This weekend's race will be just the first of two races in Doha over the next month. This week's race will serve as the season finale of the 2012 season and the race on Feb. 8-9 as part of Qatar's National Sports Day will serve as the opener of the sport's 2013 season. The February date is expected to be Doha's permanent date in the future.
Qatar's time zone is eight hours ahead of Madison and all racing will be conducted in the early hours of the morning local time. Qualifying is set for 5 a.m. EST Thursday with the first set of heats at 5 a.m. on Friday. The final heat will be run at 7 a.m. Saturday.
All racing can be viewed on the series' live webcast at www.h1unlimited.com. Locally, The Boneyard Grill will host a viewing party for the final heat starting at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday.
