Paige Black scored a career-high 30 points and Trimble County warmed up for the All "A" Classic with a 67-40 girls basketball win at Spencer County Saturday.
After a sluggish first quarter, the Raiders turned on the heat in the second period to take control. Trimble led 32-23 at halftime but stretched it out to 52-28 by the end of the third.
"We got off to an even start and it really wasn't until late in the second quarter when we caught fire," Trimble coach Kerrie Stewart said. "I put Kaylee Clifford into the game and she had some tremendous one-on-one defense that led to a couple of Erin Gonterman steals and then we got a five-second call and we seemed to take off after that."
Black, who leads the area in girls scoring at nearly 16 points per game, continued her recent hot streak with a big offensive game. She hit four 3-pointers but also found points in a variety of other ways.
"Paige has a lot of confidence right now," Stewart said. "She is really dialed in from outside but she also had some nice drives to the basket and played well inside. She had a phenomenal game."
In addition to Black, Chloe Griffith scored 14 points and Gonterman had eight for the Raiders.
Mackenzie Myers led Spencer County (6-9) with 14 points.
Trimble County now takes a 6-7 record into the All "A" Classic Eighth Region Tournament but its playing some of its best basketball of the season after winning three of its last five and taking powerful Walton-Verona into overtime before falling.
The Raiders open the tournament against host Eminence and Stewart hopes that her team can continue its strong play.
"We're not overlooking anybody. We're concentrating on Eminence," Stewart said. "But the girls are very excited to play and they're confident. Hopefully this will be a good week for us."
