HIROSHIMA, Japan - Madison's Bryan Bullington has been named opening day starter for Hiroshima when the Carp kick off the 2013 baseball season on Friday.
Bullington, now in his third season of Japanese professional baseball, will work the season opener against the Yomiuri Giants at Mazda Stadium in Hiroshima.
Now 32, the former Indiana Mr. Baseball and 1999 Madison graduate worked his final preseason exhibition on March 22 when he went 6.2 innings in a 4-3 win over the Softbank Hawks at the YafuOku Dome in Softbank. He scattered three earned runs on four hits and a hit batter while striking out six. Most of Softbank's damage came in the sixth inning when Bullington gave up a pair of singles and a triple.
Hiroshima ace, Kenta Maeda, was originally considered to start the Carp's season opener but his progress has been slowed during the preseason. Therefore, opening day honors will go to Bullington, who is one of five pitchers in the Carp rotation.
