NAGOYA, Japan - Madison's Bryan Bullington goes to the mound today at the Nogoya Dome with a chance to clinch the Hiroshima Carp's first playoff spot in 23 years.
The Carp, 66-69-2 entering today's game, need only a win over the host Chunichi Dragons (60-74-3) to lock in their first Nippon Professional Baseball Climax Series berth since 1990. Hiroshima, in third place in the Central League, moved within a game of clinching on Tuesday with a 5-3 win at fourth place Chunichi while the Yokohama Bay Stars were eliminated by their 6-1 loss to the Hanshin Tigers.
Bullington, now 10-9 on the season with a 3.37 ERA in 27 starts, enters today's game riding a six-game win streak dating back to June 30. He is one of four Hiroshima pitchers with at least 10 wins this season - the first time for that since 1986.
