Carroll County came up a bucket short of winning the Mike Swauger Holiday Classic at Bellevue over the weekend.

The Panthers knocked off Berea 57-31 in the opening round on Friday and Menifee County 61-39 in the semifinals Saturday afternoon. Carroll County's potential game-winning shot just missed in a 73-72 loss to Newport in Saturday night's championship game.

"It was a real good tournament. We played very well," Carroll County coach Carroll Yager said. "You can think of a million times that you could have gotten a basket or stopped a basket and believe me I have. But we really played well. Newport is a good team. This was a good tournament for us."

Carroll County fell behind 23-13 to Newport in the championship game and slowly chipped away. The Panthers cut the lead to one in the final moments but missed two shots in the final seven seconds.

"We got the ball inside and well, let's say there was a little bit of contact," Yager said.

Brandon Stewart scored a career-high 29 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor overall, 5-of-7 from 3-point range and 12-of-17 from the free-throw line. Dallas Gibson had 21 points and 11 rebounds.

"That's the best Brandon has ever played and that's a compliment," Yager said. "Dallas had a great game. Both of them played well and they were named to the all-tournament team."

Dakota Corbin added 14 points for Carroll, which shot 51 percent (31-for-61) from the field. Jasean Short led Newport with 19 points and Cody Peason scored 16.

In Saturday's first game, Carroll County held Menifee County scoreless in the first quarter en route to a 22-point win.

"That's one of the best defensive halves we've played," Yager said. "We got a chance to play a lot of people. It was good for us."

Gibson had 23 points and seven rebounds for the Panthers while Patrick Booth scored 10. Trever Rose led Menifee County with 18 points.

On Friday, Carroll defeated Berea 57-31. Gibson had 14 points and Trey Boles scored 13.

The Panthers, now 6-3 on the season, play in the LaRue County Tournament starting Thursday. Carroll opens with Washington County at 8 p.m.
