The weather threw Carroll County a curveball but the Panthers responded with a hit and a 54-49 win over Crittenden County in the National Guard Holiday Classic at LaRue County in Hodgenville, Ky., on Thursday.
The Panthers had expected to face Washington County in the opening round of the tournament and had planned accordingly.
But the heavy snow that hit the area on Wednesday forced a change in the schedule and instead of playing Washington, Carroll found itself matched up with Crittenden County.
"I didn't know a thing about Crittenden County," Carroll County coach Carroll Yager said. "I was able to make a few calls but really we went in blind. We had it better than Crittenden. They got here and had no idea who they were playing.
"I guess kids roll with the punches better than adults do. It was driving me nuts not knowing who we were playing."
The Panthers (7-3) built a 10-point lead heading into the fourth quarter and needed that cushion as Crittenden began chipping away. But Carroll hit its free throws down the stretch to put the game away. The Panthers were 17-for-23 from the line for the game.
Two Panthers recorded impressive double-doubles to lead the way. Trey Boles had 18 points and 11 rebounds and was named the player of the game. Dallas Gibson had 15 points and 10 rebounds.
"We played pretty well. We hit our shots and put it away in the fourth," Yager said. "It was a nice win."
Carroll was dealt a blow when starting guard Brandon Stewart was injured on a drive to the basket. He was being evaluated at a local hospital late on Thursday.
Aaron Owen and Devin Clark had 11 points each to pace Crittenden.
The Panthers advance to the semifinals today where they will take on host LaRue County.
