Carroll County football put on a defensive clinic Friday night and the offense racked up over 300 yards rushing as the Panthers clinched third place in district five, thrashing Owen County 48-7 in Owenton.

The Panther defense limited Owen County (2-7) to just 110 yards of total offense including only five yards on the ground and forced four interceptions. On the flip side, Carroll put up 328 yards of total offense, highlighted by Jacob Wise's 163 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

"At this point any win is a good win," Carroll County coach Mike Weedman said. "Owen County is a well-coached ball club and we came out and played really well tonight. One of our assistant coaches, Tom Fornash, passed away earlier this week so it's been an emotional roller coaster the last few days but our kids wanted to come out and win this one for him and they did just that."

Carroll County opened up the first quarter with a mix of good play and silly mistakes. After fumbling on its first series, Blake Newby picked off Rebel quarterback Tanner Smith with 8:58 to go. On the ensuing series, Wise ran for the first of his three touchdowns, giving the Panthers the early lead.

Later in the quarter, Carroll fumbled again but was saved by Wise's 65-yard run for a score on the following series that would put the score at 13-0 after the game's first 12 minutes.

"Our offense faced a lot of long down situations tonight including a lot of third and longs," Weedman said. "We had 11 penalties tonight which pushed us back some but I personally don't agree with many of the calls that came our way tonight. The big thing was that no matter what we faced our offense came back and executed."

Turnovers never were a factor again as Carroll County's daunting defense and successful run game were enough to make life comfortable for the rest of the night. Quarterback John Michael Adams and tailback Blake Newby each scored in the second quarter while Caleb McCarty came down with a late interception to stop a promising Owen drive and the Panthers held a 27-0 advantage at the half.

Carroll's offensive assault continued well into the second half, highlighted by Wise's 36 yard score with 7:30 remaining. The defense also continued to terrorize Smith and the Owen County offense, racking up two more interceptions including Cameron Rose's pick that was returned for 15 yards and a touchdown.

"Our game plan all night was to put pressure on their quarterback," Weedman said. "We did that numerous times throughout the course of the game and our guys never gave him much time to get off a pass."

The Rebels managed a late score on a 45-yard pass from Smith to Logan Webster but by that time the Panthers had nothing to worry about, walking away with a 48-7 win.

Carroll County (3-5) hosts rival Trimble County (0-8) in their final district matchup of the season next week. While the Raiders are winless on the season, Weedman is fully aware that rivalry games don't always go according to plan.

"Trimble is playing well right now," Weedman said. "The big thing for us is we have four archrivals and one of them we played this week. Sometimes we don't look at rivalry games quite like we should but we have to be up and ready to go for another big rival next week."
