GOING STRONG: Hanover senior Elyse Weddle (above) battles with Centre’s Paige Baechle around the basket during Monday’s game at Collier Arena. Centre outscored Hanover 9-2 in the final 47 seconds to pull out a 71-70 win in women's basketball Monday at Collier Arena.
Kelsey Block hit a pair of free throws to give Hanover a 68-62 lead with 47 seconds left in the contest. Centre countered with a bucket from Maggie Hartlage and a steal and 3-point play by Olivia Colliver to trim the Panthers' lead to 68-67 with 32 seconds on the clock.
Shauna Watson hit 1-of-2 free throws to give Hanover a 69-67 lead with 28 seconds to play. The Colonels, however, had three attempts at the basket on the next trip down the floor and eventually tied the game 69-69 on Paige Baechle's putback with 14 ticks remaining.
The Panthers turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds pass. Hartlage, who swiped the pass, was fouled on the play and made two free throws to nudge Centre ahead, 71-69, with just six seconds to go.
With a final attempt to force overtime, junior guard Alicia Hopkins went the length of the court and was fouled on a last-second attempt from point-blank range.
Hopkins, with only two-tenths of a second on the clock, hit the first of the two free throws, but her second rolled off the rim for the final margin.
Centre (6-2) led by as many as eight points in the first half but it was Hanover that held the lead at the break, 33-32.
The Panthers (3-5) controlled most of the second half and appeared ready to close out the win. But Hanover shot just 30.8 percent (12-for-39) from the floor in the second half and 23-for-73 (31.5 percent) overall. The Panthers were 7-of-27 (25.9 percent) on 3-point shots and hit just 2-of-12 in the second half.
Centre, on the other hand, was 14-for-32 (43.8 percent) from the floor in the final 20 minutes and 26-for-66 (39.4 percent) overall. The Colonels did commit 27 turnovers, but they also held a 51-44 rebounding advantage.
Hopkins led four Hanover players in double figures with 15 points. Caitlin Bischoff had a career-high 10 rebounds and added 13 points to notch her first career double-double.
Block, a 2012 Madison High School graduate, finished with a career-best 13 points off the bench. Jessie Davidson from nearby Austin added 11.
Baechle tallied 17 points and 13 boards to pace Centre. Hartlage scored 14 points.
The game was Hanover's last before the holiday break. The Panthers have traveled to Las Vegas, southern California and Alabama during the break in year's past but will stay closer to home this time when they compete in the DePauw Tournament Dec. 29-30.
Hanover will face Ithaca (N.Y.) on Dec. 29 in the opening round and will play either Alma (Mich.) or defending NCAA Division III National Champion DePauw on Dec. 30.
Following the break the Panthers will host Defiance (Ohio) on Jan. 4 to kick-off the rest of their Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule.
