Dakota Corbin's put-back at the buzzer lifted Carroll County to a 68-66 win over Walton-Verona in the boys portion of a doubleheader Friday in Carrollton.
Tied 66-66, Carroll inbounded the ball with 6.8 seconds remaining and Jacob Wise put up a 15-footer that rimmed out with three seconds left. Corbin was there to gather in the rebound and put up the game winner from under the Panthers' basket with the clock going to zero with the ball in the air.
Carroll (16-11, 7-4 North Central Kentucky) had led by 10 late in the fourth quarter but let Walton-Verona back into the game when the Panthers went into a stall to run out the clock. The Bearcats' comeback was aided by the Panthers missing five late free throws - including the front end of three bonus situations.
Senior Trey Boles had another big game for the Panthers, posting a double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds that included a perfect 8-for-8 from the field. The only shot Boles missed was a free throw where he was 3-of-4 at the foul line.
Overall, the Panthers made seven 3-pointers, three by senior Brandon Stewart who was 3-for-6 from behind the arc and scored 16 points.
Walton-Verona knocked down 12 3-pointers and shot 42 percent (13-for-27) from the floor. Carroll, which outrebounded the Bearcats 28-21, hit on 65 percent (28-for-43) overall.
Tanner Mavis scored 19 points and Grant Mavis had 18 points of 4-of-9 3-pointers to lead Walton-Verona (9-19, 4-3 NCKC).
The win avenged a 71-42 loss o Walton-Verona in the All "A" Classic Eighth Region tourney on Jan. 18 and sends Carroll into the 31st District Tournament having won three of its last four. The Panthers host Owen County in the semifinals on Wednesday.
