- Carroll County High School's cheerleading squad was named JamFest 2012-2013 National Champions at a competition held at the Kentucky International Convention center March 22-23.

The competition hosted more than 112 teams from across the nation with Carroll County scored on both Saturday and Sunday in the intermediate co-ed division.

Cheer squad members were awarded national champion jackets and medals, along with a national champion trophy and banner for the school.

The squad, coached by Ashlea Ramsey and Shelly Hunt, includes: Zach Beckham, Jessica Peck, Dillon Craig, Ashley Gentry, Casey Breeden, Courtney Powell, Josh Gibbs, Darian Skirvin, Matt Bartley, Jessica Peck, Ramsey Gordon, Ashton Marksberry, Tori Brock, Jacy Hoffman, Elli Yocum, Arial McBurney.

The competition concludes Carroll County's cheerleading season. Tryouts for next year's squad will be held in May.



- Hanover College's Danielle Merrick has been named as the Heartland Collegiate athletic Conference hitter of the week in softball.

Merrick, a sophomore infielder from Eminence (Ind.) High School, keyed the Panthers' offense in two non-conference wins over Westminster (Mo.) College last week to earn the conference honor.

Playing as Hanover's starting shortstop, Merrick finished the week batting 6-for-7 (.857) with two doubles, a run scored, and an RBI as the Panthers swept a doubleheader from Westminster on Friday.

Hanover (3-9, 0-0 HCAC) will visit nono-conference Spalding University and HCAC rival Defiance College this week.

Other HACA honorees for this week included: Baseball Hitter - Jordan Nieman, Manchester University; Baseball Pitcher - Bryce Murphy, Manchester University; Softball Pitcher - Hannah Belvo, Anderson University; Men's Tennis - Jack Ventura-Cruess, Earlham College; Men's Golf - Matt Stiens, College of Mount St. Joseph; Men's Track Athlete - Andrew Thompson, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology; Men's Field Athlete - Tom Postema, Defiance College; Women's Track Athlete - Danialle Hayes, Franklin College; Women's Field Athlete - Liz Evans, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.



- Milton (Ky.) Baptist Church will register children ages five through 13 for its upcoming Upward Soccer season.

Registration and evaluations will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 4 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 6.

- Madison Parks Department will hold an organizational meeting for its men's summer softball league on Thursday, March 28, at The Historic Broadway Hotel and Tavern.

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The parks department is once again running the league with games to be played at John Paul Park. Anyone interested in fielding a team should have a representative at the meeting. The fee per team is $600.

- The Madison Parks Department now has applications available for the 2013 baseball and softball seasons for those ages seven to 15.

The participation fee is $50. Forms for those ages seven to 12 are due March 29. Forms for those ages 13-15 are due May 17.

Applications are being distributed to area schools. They are also available at the Madison Parks Department which is located in the Brown Gym and online at madisonparks.com.

- The Spring Sprint annual 5K run & walk fundraiser for the Jefferson County Animal Shelter will be held April 6.

Registration forms are available at the shelter. The cost is $20 before March 15 and $25 after that date. T-shirts are only guaranteed for those registering before March 15.

The starting & ending location will be the shelter at 2727 Hannah Drive in Madison. The race will begin at 8 a.m. with registration beginning at 6:30 a.m. Leashed and well-behaved dogs are invited to participate with proof of rabies vaccination.
