- Several local athletes have been named Ohio River Valley Conference award winners.

Switzerland County's Whitley Schirmer and Robin Furnish; Southwestern's Savannah Reuda, Cass Lawson, Rebekah Anderson and Jayla Watson; and Shawe's Caroline Wehner were named to the ORVC girls cross country all-conference team.

Switzerland County's Talen Taylor and Braden Burk along with Southwestern's Ryan Furnish and Josiah Lawson were named to the ORVC boys cross country all-conference team.

Shawe's Claire Higgins was named the ORVC volleyball player of the week. Higgins, recorded 17 kills, 16 digs, eight blocks and seven aces this past week along with a serving percentage of 96 and a passing percentage of 95.



- Hanover College's rugby club picked up a pair of victories on Saturday at Earlham College.

The men won two matches and tied one, 19-0, 5-5 and 24-5. It was the first victory for the men over Earlham in three years. The Panthers next match will be on Nov. 2 at DePauw.

The women defeated Earlham in three straight games, 22-5, 17-14 and 24-12, extending their win streak to 12 games. They will travel to Eastern Kentucky University on Oct. 20.



- Madison junior varsity volleyball defeated Shawe 25-15 and 25-13 Monday at Meny Gymnasium.

Bailey Wolf led Shawe, going 11-for-11 attacking and 27-of-31 passing with two kills and two digs. EmaLee Copeland was 23-of-26 passing with five digs and one kill while Ava Lohrig had three aces.

Madison is now 12-4 on the season.



- The Fraternal Order of Police Stacks of Power Lodge No. 128 is holding its inaugural golf scramble on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The event is at Sunrise Golf Course beginning at 12:30 p.m. Cost is $50 per golofer and includes greens fee, golf cart and lunch. Cash prizes will be awarded.

- Miss Madison Inc. will give hydroplane fans a chance to wish a happy retirement to driver Steve David on Friday, Nov. 8 at the Boneyard Grill in Madison.

The event runs from 7-9 p.m. and is open to anyone who wants to congratulate David on his retirement after 13 years as the driver of the Oh Boy! Oberto sponsored Miss Madison. Admission is free.

- Madison junior Amanda Detmer was selected to the IHSAA Girls Golf All-State team on Monday.

Detmer, finished eighth overall at the state finals on Saturday, shooting a 36-hole score of 149.



- Trimble County freshman volleyball won the "gold" championship at the Halloween Smash Tournament in Lexington on Saturday.

The Raiders defeated Boone County, Woodford County and Washington County before knocking off host Lexington Lafayette in the championship match.



- Madison junior high school soccer defeated Scottsburg 5-1 Thursday at home.

Madison goals were scored by Landon Conner, Sam Heitz, Takanari Kato and A.J. Karst with assists from Heitz, Kato and Karst. Defensive MVP was Tristan Storie with Kato and Karst earning Offensive MVP honors.



- The Jefferson County Futbol Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22 to discuss the upcoming indoor soccer season.

The meeting is open to all prospective players and parents and will be held in the Madison Consolidated High School cafeteria.



- The Madison Parks Department is accepting Little League Basketball forms for the upcoming 2013-2014 season.

Boys and girls in grades four through six can participate. Forms are due Nov. 1 and the cost is $50 per player. Forms are available at the Madison Parks Department Office and at all area schools or can be printed off at www.madisonparks.com.

- The Lide White Boys and Girls Club is offering basketball leagues and little league wrestling this winter.

Basketball leagues will be offered for boys and girls, ages four through third grade and run Nov. 4 through Feb. 22.

Applications are due on Friday, Oct. 18. Cost is $40 for club members and $50 for non-club members. A $10 late feel will be assessed after the due date.

Little league wrestling is open to boys and girls, age 5 through sixth grade. Middle school wrestling members are not permitted to participate.

Applications are due by Jan. 15. The season runs from Jan. 1 through Feb. 26. Cost is $30 for club members and $40 for non-club members. A $10 late fee will be assessed if received after the due date.
