Hanover's four-game win streak against Defiance (Ohio) came to an end Saturday with a 75-58 men's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference basketball loss in Defiance, Ohio.
The conference clash was never more than a two-possession spread before an eight-minute stretch late in the opening half allowed the host Yellow Jackets (3-4, 1-2 HCAC) to get away.
Michael Van Kleunen, a freshman from Mason, Ohio, converted a three-point play to pull Hanover within 21-18 with 8:20 left in the first period. Defiance countered with a 20-6 run over the next seven minutes to sprint ahead 41-24 with a minute left in the half.
The Yellow Jackets held the double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Van Kleunen, who has reached double figures in three of his past four games, nailed a 3-pointer to get Hanover within 48-36 with 12:41 left in the game. However, Drew Frizell answered for Defiance with back-to-back 3-pointers in the following minute to bump the margin to 18 points (54-36).
Hanover went on to mount one final charge.
Tim Bass, a sophomore from Indianapolis, scored from inside; Brian Gunter, a senior from Louisville, hit a 3-pointer; and Ryan Nowicki, a senior from Westfield, scored a lay-up on a fast break to cut the Defiance cushion to 56-44 with 8:37 on the clock.
But that was as close as the Panthers would get down the stretch.
Defiance countered with a 12-4 run - behind an eight-point rally by Ryan Hicks - over the next five minutes. The late burst allowed the Yellow Jackets to extend the lead to 68-48 with 3:08 left and lock up the win.
Hanover, which committed just six turnovers, hit 21-of-65 field goals (32.3 percent), but was only 3-of-27 from 3-point range (11.1 percent). Defiance made 29-of-58 from the floor (50 percent), including eight 3-pointers.
Bass scored 11 points and Van Kleunen added 10 off the bench for Hanover. Gunter led the Panthers with seven rebounds, while Jacob Steinhart, a freshman from Mount Vernon, added six boards off the bench.
Frizell netted 17 points to pace the YellowJackets.
Hanover, now 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the HCAC, visits Rose-Hulman on Saturday.
