Taylor Grote scored the game-winning shot with 20 seconds to play to lift Shawe Memorial to a 29-27 win at Milan on Tuesday.

The win was the Hilltoppers' second over Milan in the past three weeks, but this one counted in the Ohio River Valley Conference standings.

"We battled a lot of adverse conditions to pull this win out," Shawe coach Camille Deuser said. "Taylor didn't have her best game but stepped up when we needed her. All of the girls really contributed in this win and we needed every single one of them."

The game was close throughout with neither team holding much of a lead over the other. Shawe led 5-2 after the first quarter and 14-9 at halftime. The Hilltoppers then took a 21-18 cushion into the final quarter.

Amelia Koehler led Shawe with seven points, Maddie Waller and Taylor Grote scored six each, Jenna Armstrong had four, Hannah Storm added three, Meg Scroggins scored two and Sarelia Rios-Garcia added one.

The Hilltoppers were just 11-for-47 (23 percent) from the floor but Milan shot just 17 percent (8-for-46) overall. Shawe had 28 turnovers while Milan had 36.

"Needless to say we have a lot of things we need to continue working on," Deuser said. "Most importantly I finally saw some mental toughness out of my team. They decided that this was their game and they were not going to lose no matter what."
