Hanover men fall to Taylor 77-63 at Zimmerman

Hanover College's men's basketball team lost to Taylor 77-63 in the opening game of the Charles Zimmerman Classic Friday in Springfield, Ohio.
Hanover trailed 23-22 with four minutes left in the first half before Taylor closed the period with a 13-5 run to build a 36-27 lead at the break.
Brian Gunter hit a pair of baskets to pull the Panthers within 38-33 just 90 seconds into the second half. The Trojans countered with a 3-pointer from Ben Raichel and a bucket by Nate Kasper to nudge the margin to 43-33 with 16:37 on the clock.
Tim Bass scored twice from inside and Gunter drained a 3-pointer as the Panthers shaved the lead to 50-44. Ryan Nowicki later hit from beyond the arc to keep Hanover within seven points (56-49) with 8:14 on the clock.
Casey Coons scored six of his 13 points in the next four minutes as Taylor used a 10-1 run to build a 66-50 lead with 3:55 left.
Nowicki scored nine points down the stretch, but the Panthers could not cut the lead to single digits.
Hanover, which committed just eight turnovers, finished the outing 22-of-58 from the floor (37.9 percent). The Panthers made 7-of-24 attempts (29.2 percent) from long range.
Nowicki scored 16 points to lead Hanover. Bass had 13 points while Gunter added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Kasper posted a game-high 23 points and added eight rebounds to pace Taylor. Tommy Peller added 18 points for the Trojans (9-5).
Hanover, now 5-5 on the season, faces either host Wittenberg or Bethany (W.Va.) in the consolation game today.
