Hanover men's basketball survived a 73-72 non-conference clash on the road Tuesday against Thomas More in Crestview Hills, Ky.
The Panthers never trailed in the contest but led by more than two possessions for just six minutes total.
Leading 44-39 coming out of halftime, Hanover used a 12-2 run over the next three minutes to pad its lead to 63-52 near the midway point of the second half. Thomas More (2-5) chipped away at that deficit and with 4:45 remaining trailed just 67-65.
Hanover freshman Cory Muchmore hit a shot in the post with 2:34 left to push the Panthers' lead back out to four but the Saints' Drew Mumford countered with a basket and brought the game back to within a possession.
After a Michael Van Kleunen offensive rebound putback with 1:14 to go, Thomas More's Nate McGovney drilled a 3-pointer with 56 seconds left. Down 73-72, the Saints got the ball back in the final seconds but Mumford missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer that allowed Hanover to escape with the road win.
Hanover put three players in double figures as Van Kleunen matched a career-high with 15 points, junior guard Tim Bass added 14 and Desmond Marks scored a dozen.
The Saints' Mumford led all scorers with 24 points while Nate McGovney scored 14.
The Panthers shot a season high 32-of-56 from the field for 57.1 percent including eight three-pointers to Thomas More's 24-of-58 from the field for 41.4 percent. However, the Saints went to the foul line 20 times and hit 19 while Hanover shot just four free throws and made only one.
The Panthers held a 35-26 advantage on the boards and tallied 22 assists to just 17 by Thomas More.
Hanover (6-2) visits Wooster, Ohio, on Dec. 29 to face Illinois College.
