Hanover College's bend-but-don't break defense propelled the Panthers to a 47-14 win over Defiance (Ohio) Saturday at L.S. Ayres Field.
Hanover's defense was on the field for over 37 minutes and gave up 402 total yards - including 242 on the ground. But they also blocked a field goal, forced four turnovers, had four sacks, held Defiance to 4-of-15 on third down, 2-of-5 inside the red zone and returned an interception for a touchdown.
That defensive performance, coupled with five touchdown passes from quarterback Dexter Britt, was more than enough to clinch Hanover's fifth-straight win and to keep the Panthers unbeaten in the Heartland Conference.
"There were some big stops when they had the ball deep in our territory," Hanover coach Steve Baudendistel said. "The defense always answers the call not matter what situation they're put in. Coach (Denny) Dorrell does a great job getting the guys fired up and ready to play. It's a big win. I talked to the team afterwards about how proud I was we won five straight."
The defense showed up in the first quarter when senior All-American linebacker Andy Dalton recovered a fumble and later picked off a Garrett Teague pass.
The game's first score came from Spencer Corrao who ran it in from 10 yards out. Corrao finished the game with 126 yards and a touchdown, the third time this season that he eclipsed the century mark.
"(Corrao) did a good job this game getting to the perimeter and chewing up a lot of yards," Baudendistel said. "The middle was clogged up a lot of the day. He could have a had a couple more big runs but one guy tripped him up, other than that he could have had an even bigger day. He did a great job on the perimeter and he took care of the ball. He's doing a great job."
Just seconds after Corrao's score, Britt connected with Daniel Passafiume for a 22-yard touchdown to put the Panthers ahead 14-0.
Defiance (2-6, 2-4 HCAC) finally got its offense rolling in the second quarter. Teague hit Brian Mircovich for a 4-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-7.
Hanover (5-2, 5-0 HCAC) went back ahead by two scores just two minutes later when Britt hit Colton Zeck on a 3-yard score.
Eric Strickland punched it in from 1-yard out to pull Defiance back to within 20-14 with 21 seconds left before the half. But a bad kick gave the Panthers the ball near midfield and Hanover took advantage.
Britt found a streaking Dwayne Eubanks down the sideline for a 58-yard touchdown pass on the first play and the Panthers took a 27-14 lead into the half.
"That was big," Baudendistel said of the late score. "We kind of talked as coaches in that situation. A couple of the defensive coaches and I and the offensive coaches agreed there were only 20 seconds left but we wanted to take a shot and get some momentum going into the half knowing we get the ball first in the second half."
The Panthers put the game away in the second half with two more touchdown passes from Britt. He connected again with Eubanks on a 3-yard pass then hooked up with Jacob Noger for a 5-yard touchdown pass.
Before he left the game the junior from Louisville was 17-of-29 for 210 yards and a career-high five touchdowns.
"(Britt) did good," Baudendistel said. "He had that fumble in the first half which is something we got to eliminate. He did a good job, made good decisions all day. He's getting better every single week."
Hanover capped off the offensive onslaught when Justin Magaw returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.
"We have a lot of momentum for us going into homecoming," Baudendistel said. "The alumni are coming back and with us 5-2 that's going to make everyone happy when they see what our record is."
Hanover will play its final home game of the season this week against Earlham (1-6, 1-4 HCAC). The game will be both homecoming and senior night.
