Hanover College placed three players in double figures - including a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds off the bench by junior forward Elyse Weddle - to power past Adrian (Mich.) College 76-66 in the Panthers' women's season-opener Friday night at Collier Arena.
Playing in the opening game of the Hanover Classic on campus, the Panthers were led by Caitlin Bischoff, a sophomore forward from Atlanta, Ind., and Courtney Prater, a senior forward from Anderson, who scored 16 points each for team-high honors.
However, it was Weddle's eight first half points and six rebounds that sparked the Panthers to a 40-30 lead by halftime and Hanover never looked back as Prater, the team's leading returning scorer, battled foul trouble much of the night.
Hanover's press forced 17 first-half turnovers and 33 for the game with Bischoff collecting six of the Panthers' 11 steals. Hanover combined that defense with 34 percent shooting from the field in the opening 20 minutes to keep the Bulldogs at bay throughout.
Hanover continued its torrid shooting after halftime when Prater scored four straight points to begin the second half en route to netting 10 in the final period including 6-of-7 shooting at the free-throw line.
The Bulldogs closed to within six points on several occasions in the second period, but the Panthers answered with a run each time to cancel Adrian 36-36 in the second half and make the 10-point halftime lead stand up at the finish.
Two free throws by Shauna Watson, a sophomore guard from Fort Wayne, with 2:26 left in the game pushed Hanover's lead to 69-55 and sealed the outcome.
Bischoff and Weddle both sank two free throws as the Bulldogs attempted to stop the clock in the waning seconds of the game.
The Panthers went to the foul line 37 times, making 29 for 78.4 percent on the night.
Hanover ended up shooting 41.5 percent from the field for the game while limiting Adrian to a 36.4 field-goal percentage and a 15.4 percent mark from long range.
Hanover, now 1-0, hosts Wittenberg (Ohio) University at 1 p.m. today while Adrian, now 0-1, plays Transylvania (Ky.) University at 3 p.m. in the final matchup of the Classic.
Amber Rice scored 21 points in Friday's second game to lead Wittenberg to a 64-54 win over Transylvania. Madisen Webb and Katelyn Smith scored 11 points and seven rebounds each for Transylvania.
