Hanover baseball kicked off a three-game Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series against Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) on Friday by defeating the Lions 13-9 at home.
A pair of runs gave Mount St. Joseph a 2-0 lead after an inning of play but Hanover used six hits in the bottom of the third to score five runs and take a 5-2 lead.
The Panthers continued to shine offensively, adding another four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth and then taking advantage of shaky Mount pitching in the sixth to plate across another four runs, padding the lead at 13-2.
Mount St. Joseph (12-23, 7-16 HCAC) made a furious comeback attempt in the final two innings. A flurry of Hanover errors helped the Lions score six runs in the eighth inning and an early run in the top of the ninth kept the rally alive.
Hanover managed to shut the door after the visitor's lone run in the final inning and hold on for the four-run win.
The Panthers finished the night with 12 hits, none of which went for extra bases.
Zack Shultz, Ryan Johns and Matt Brooks each had two hits with Shultz providing a team-high three RBIs and Johns adding a team-high three runs.
Nolan Hall, Kolton Chapman, Chris Ares, Matt Newman, Cameron Walls and Carroll County graduate D.C. Craig had a single each with Craig adding two runs and an RBI.
Gino Chumas started the game on the mound and picked up the victory. Chumas allowed two runs - one earned - on eight hits through five innings. He walked two and struck out two.
Hanover (14-19, 10-13 HCAC) finishes the series today against the Lions in an afternoon doubleheader.
