A school record holder in the event, Kleopfer threw the shot 37 feet, 1 1/4 inches. The mark was just three-quarters of an inch shy of her personal best when she set the Southwestern school record last year.
"Bethani did an amazing job," Southwestern throwing coach Bridget Skvara said. "She has worked hard during the off season and it showed. Throwing just shy of her school record is a great place to be this early in the season. I know she will continue to improve over the course of the outdoor season."
"Bethani looked so comfortable throwing. I am looking forward to seeing her improve throughout the season," Lady Rebels head coach Jenny Laws said. "We would love for her to set a farther school record, and we would love for her to make it as far in the outdoor state tournament as possible."
Kleopfer and Southwestern's track and field team will open the outdoor season on April 8 in a meet at Milan.
