New Washington greeted Shawe's young players rudely with 37 unanswered points en route to a 70-18 win Saturday in Madison.

The Mustangs, ranked 16th in the Class A coaches poll, forced nine turnovers in the first eight minutes and led 29-0 after the first quarter. New Washington's run reached 37-0 before the Hilltoppers broke up the shutout midway through the second quarter.

It was a rough start for coach Camille Deuser, who was making her head coaching debut. But the former Southwestern Lady Rebel was proud of the way her team, which has no seniors and only one junior, performed.

"There was some nerves to be sure and it showed," Deuser said. "New Washington is a very good team and we knew that coming in. But I was proud of the way we played in the second half. We really settled down."

New Washington (2-0) wasted little time in turning the game into a rout. Ashley Johnson scored on a layup 23 seconds into the game and the Mustangs led 8-0 before the first minute had elapsed.

Shawe valiantly tried to run its offense but had little luck against the pressing Mustangs and the mistakes quickly piled up.

New Washington coach Terry White called off the press when the scored reached 19-0 and began substituting liberally after that. It didn't stop the score from reaching 37-0 with 4:39 left in the second.

Taylor Grote, Shawe's only junior, finally broke the shutout with a short jumper with 4:27 left in the first half. Grote's basket seemed to break the spell over the Hilltoppers who outscored New Washington 7-5 over the rest of half.

Still, Shawe trailed 42-7 at halftime and 58-9 after three quarters. The Hilltoppers matched their output over the first three quarters in the final frame for the final total.

Deuser understands that her young team has a long way to go to reach its potential but she was happy with what she saw.

"They kept their heads up and they continued to play the way we wanted them to," Deuser said. "I'm proud of them."

Freshman Jenna Armstrong led Shawe with 10 points while Grote and Sarelia Rios-Garcia scored four points each.

Ten different players scored for New Washington with Kriston Sarver leading the way for 18 points. Caroline Ricks had 15 points and Johnson scored 14.

Shawe turned the ball over 27 times to New Washington's 12. The Mustangs were 11-for-18 from the free-throw line while Shawe was 0-for-5.

The Hilltoppers host Providence on Tuesday.
