Southwestern overcame a poor shooting performance at the line to post a big Ohio River Valley Conference win, 44-42 over Rising Sun in overtime Tuesday on the road.

The Rebels, who have now won two of their last three, shot just 22-for-43 from the line and hit only 10 shots from the floor. But Southwestern did not back down and hit the shots when they needed to for the win.

"We hit eight 2-pointers, two 3-pointers and missed 19 free throws but somehow pulled out the win," Southwestern coach Kenny Garrett said. "That tells you right there how good our defense played. They were very active and played very well. It might have been our best defense of the season."

Southwestern (5-13, 2-1 ORVC) trailed 24-17 in the second quarter but rallied and scored 15 points in the fourth to force overtime. The Rebels then got the win in overtime.

"We hit the shots and made the plays and in the overtime we got a little luck thrown our way," Garrett said. "I've kept saying that if we keep working hard good things will come our way and it did tonight. We needed this win, both physically and mentally."

Morgan Mahoney led Southwestern with 11 points and Cheyenne McKinley and Debbie Hardy scored 10 points each.

Southwestern hosts Milan on senior night on Thursday and has a chance to close the regular season playing its best ball of the season. The Rebels play at Jac-Cen-Del next week and to Switzerland County the following week.

"If we can put together a little run we can go into the sectional with some momentum," Garrett said. "That's the important thing, to get hot at the right time. Who knows what will happen?"
