Lady Rebels tumble twice at Rumble

Southwestern proved to be a generous host in a pair of lopsided losses to Mitchell and Connersville at the Rumble on the River girls basketball tourney Friday in Hanover.
The Lady Rebels opened the annual event with a 46-31 setback to Mitchell Friday afternoon and then took an even harder beating by Connersville 61-29 in the losers bracket semifinals Friday nght.
Southwestern, now 3-11, will play in the seventh place game at 2 p.m. today at Delbert O. King Gymnasium. Mitchell moves on to the winners bracket semifinals against Scottsburg at 10 a.m. and Connersville heads to the fifth place game at 4 p.m.
Southwestern's two losses on Friday were similar in that the Rebels managed to hang with the opposition for about a quarter before watching both opponents pull steadily away.
First year head coach Kenny Garrett said the culprit in each contest was Southwestern's inability to prevent big runs. The fuel for those runs was Rebel turnovers.
"We played real good in the first quarter tonight and were tied 14-14 with Connersville," Garrett said. "But our worst thing this year has been giving up big runs and that's what happened tonight. It was 14-14 and the next time I looked up at the scoreboard it was 30-17 and I was needing a timeout.
"Connersville went on a 16-3 run and when I called the timeout you could just see it in our kids' eyes, 'Here we go again,'" Garrett said.
The Rebels could do little to stem the tide against Connersville, and as the game wore on and the point spread ballooned the Rebels' struggles intensified.
"Right now we're not playing hard the whole game," Garrett said. "You can't expect to win ballgames when you're playing two, maybe two-and-a-half quarters. They put us on our heels and never let us back off them."
Southwestern placed just one player in double figures all day when Morgan Mahoney scored 10 in the loss to Connersville to go with eight against Mitchell. Cheyenne McKinley scored nine against Mitchell but dropped off to three against Connersville and Savannah Hubbard scored eight in the Mitchell game but just six against Connersville.
Meanwhile, Connersville's 5-foot-9 senior guard, Tierra Huntsman, almost outscored the Rebels by herself with a game-high 25 points.
For the Rebels to play so poorly in their own tourney is a disappointment coming off the holiday break, Garrett said. He had hoped to see the team come together and work out some of its gaps over the holidays to be ready for a strong finish in both the conference and upcoming sectional tourney.
"If you look at our schedule we're 3-10 and we've played only two 2A schools and two 1A schools and all the rest are 3As and 4As," Garrett said. "If our schedule were flipped we might have a better record but it wouldn't make us any better prepared for the second half of the season. Our schedule is what it is but our conference and sectional aspirations are still there for us to achieve, but we've got to get better.
"I told the kids after the game tonight that all I want them to do is 'Come play hard the rest of the way. That's all I ask you to do.'"
