A three-point play with 6.9 seconds left proved to be the difference as Hanover's women's basketball team opened its season with a 69-67 loss to Maryville (Tenn.) in the Besuden Classic at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky. on Friday.
Maryville's Mindy Brackins scored from inside and added a free throw to push the Scots ahead with 6.9 seconds on the clock. Hanover worked the ball under the bucket, but was not able to get off a shot as time expired.
Alicia Hopkins, a junior guard from Columbus, scored 13 points to lead three Panthers in double figures. Stephanie Pahren had career highs with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while senior Elyse Weddle added 10 points and six boards.
Lauren Burnett posted 15 points and 11 rebounds to spark Maryville (1-0).
Hanover led 28-27 at the intermission, but had to eventually rally from a six-point deficit in the final seven minutes. Trailing 61-55, Pahren scored five points to lead a 12-4 run which pushed the Panthers ahead 67-65 with 1:28 to play.
Burnett hit a free throw with 58 seconds left to cut Hanover's lead to 67-66.
Weddle appeared to score from inside and pick up a foul with 36 seconds to go, but was whistled for a charge to hand the ball back to Maryville.
The Scots worked the ball around the right perimeter before going inside to Brackins for the game-winning three-point play.
Hanover shot 37.3 percent from the field (25-of-67), but hit just 13-of-22 free throws (59.1 percent).
The Panthers forced 24 turnovers and tallied 16 steals. Hopkins led the effort with a game-high six steals.
