Hanover women's basketball's upset bid of 16th-ranked Ithaca (N.Y.) fell short 77-70 on Sunday in the first round of the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Tournament at DePauw.
Trailing by two with 2:48 left in the game, Hanover freshman Jenna Meyer, a North Decatur graduate and a second semester transfer from Georgetown (Ky.) College, drilled two free throws to put the Panthers up 70-69.
Ithaca (6-1) missed three field goal attempts following the free throws but Mary Kate Tierney's shot from inside the arc with 55 seconds to go finally allowed the Bombers to retake the lead 71-70. Hanover missed its final seven shots of the game - four in the final 60 seconds - as Ithaca tacked on six more points for the 77-70 victory.
The two teams spent the game's first 38 minutes trading blows. The squads combined for 19 lead changes in the contest and were tied 17 times with neither team leading by more than six points until the final minute.
Hanover put four scorers in double figures. Junior Alicia Hopkins scored 15 points while Caitlin Bischoff finished with 14. Senior Elyse Weddle had 11 and junior guard Shauna Watson added 10.
Ithaca had two players post double-doubles in the game. Tierney had 22 points and 12 rebounds while Jenn Escobido scored 12 points and had 10 boards. Tiereney also added six assists and two blocked shots.
The Panthers were just 26-of-70 from the field for 37 percent and only 5-of-19 from 3-point range while Ithaca was 30-of-66 from the field for 46 percent and owned a 48-38 rebounding advantage.
Hanover (3-6) plays in the tournament's consolation game today against Alma (Mich.). Alma fell to top-ranked DePauw 70-40 in Saturday's second semifinal.
