GOSHEN, Ky. - Trimble County led 5-4 early in Wednesday's 29th District opener at North Oldham High School but district favorite South Oldham then unleashed a 19-2 tear the rest of the quarter and never looked back en route to an 88-60 victory.
"We started off well," said Trimble County head coach John Leep. "Usually they make a big run on us right at the start. But they called time-out and had us on our heels after that.
"They're a tough team," Leep added. "They're the regional favorite and ranked 16th in the state."
South Oldham guard Kyle Young, who led all scorers with 33 points, was a one-man wrecking crew in the opening period with 18 points. He had five of the Dragons' 14 3-pointers on the night.
Raider forwards Dalton James and Michael Dunaway each scored six points in the second quarter but South Oldham seemed unstoppable, pouring in seven more 3-pointers.
South's quickness on defense was equally tough on Trimble County, as the Raiders were victims of numerous steals and turnovers that led directly to points on the other end.
By halftime, South had pulled out to a comfortable 51-19 advantage.
South Oldham added another 25 points in the third period while Trimble County began playing better offensively with 20. Dunaway added six points from the field and went 5-for-6 at the free throw line and Josh Rexroat added five points.
"I'm proud of the way we played in the second half," Leep said. "We were able to get the ball in to Michael. We can use these games to make us better."
Even though the game was well out of hand, the Raiders turned in their best eight minutes in the final period, outscoring the Dragons 21-12. Andrew Young nailed three treys and Dalton James added six points.
After the game, Leep talked about Andrew Young, his lone senior.
"I think tonight was my longest post-game meeting," the coach said. "We talked about his career and his leadership and the pleasure he has been to coach.
"Some of his improvements have been at the free-throw line where he was a career 60 percent shooter and he hit 80 percent this year. His assists have also improved from four or five per year to two or three per game and how he's developed into the best passer on the team."
Leep also praised the play of James, who was playing despite suffering a painful spider bite earlier this week. "Dalton played an amazing game and was our second-leading scorer," the coach said.
Trimble County finishes its season at 11-15 while South Oldham improves to 19-3 and will play the winner of tonight's semifinal between Oldham County and North Oldham in Friday's championship.
The Trimble-South Oldham game was originally scheduled for Tuesday before a water main break in Oldham County disrupted water supply to the school and forced postponement. Prior to tonight's Oldham-North matchup, Trimble's girls will play South Oldham in a semifinal at 6 p.m.
