Rebels fall short at Jennings County, 68-47

Southwestern rallied from an early double-digit deficit but couldn't sustain the momentum in a 68-47 girls basketball loss Friday at Jennings County.
The Lady Rebels fell behind 11-0 from the start but rebounded to take an 18-17 lead late in the second quarter. Southwestern's led 24-19 when the wheels fell off.
Jennings County hit back-to-back 3-pointers to re-take the lead and closed the half with a three-point play to hit the break up 34-25. The Panthers then took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring Southwestern 22-8 to pull away.
"I told the girls at halftime that (Jennings) was going to let us back in the game because of their ball-handling but it never happened," Southwestern coach Kenny Garrett said. "They opened the third with a 3-pointer and we never recovered."
Jennings County committed a whopping 29 fouls in the game and sent Southwestern to the free-throw line 36 times, but the Rebels hit just 18. The poor foul shooting, together with turnovers and offensive rebounding, doomed Southwestern.
"We were in the double bonus right at the start of the second quarter and went to the line 12 times but we only hit five," Garrett said. "Block-outs killed us. I haven't looked at the film yet but I would bet we gave up 25 offensive rebounds and probably had 33 to 35 turnovers. And most of them were unforced.
"We'll take a look at the film and get back to work on Monday. We'll have to clean it up a lot better before Wednesday."
Debbie Hardy was the only Rebel in double figures with 11 points. Sam Ison added nine.
Southwestern (2-2) hosts Class 3A No. 10 Madison on Wednesday in the annual Turkey Shootout.
