Rebels swim to tri-meet sweep over Pirates, Raiders

Southwestern's swim teams scored a pair of tri-meet wins at home on Tuesday.
The Rebels combined for 17 wins on the night. In the girls meet, Southwestern scored 129 points to South Ripley's 100 and Charlestown's 16. In the boys meet, the Rebels scored 135 to pull away from South Ripley (25) and Charlestown (19).
"Overall, the meet went well tonight. We changed things up a bit and gave some kids the opportunity to swim some new events," Southwestern coach Jay Crawford said. "We feel that it pulled them out of the rut they've appeared to be in for the last few meets.
"We had 29 best times tonight, so we have no complaints."
Gianna Bennett, Nathan Anderson, and Rebekah Anderson stood out the most according to Crawford. Sarah Schroeder continues to drop her times, Taylor Suthard dropped a minute and a half in her 500 free, Kaitlyn Deskins dropped 34 seconds in the 200 free and Zack Hamilton dropped eight seconds in his 200 free.
Wins for the Southwestern boys were: Zachary Hamilton, 200 free, 2:17.85 and 100 breast, 1:14.84; Mitchel Swafford, 200 IM, 2:35.45 and 100 free, 57.47; Nathan Anderson, 500 free, 6:12.39; Jacob Shaffer, 100 back, 1:23.08; Anderson, Hamilton, Swafford and Dylan Truesdell, 200 medley relay, 2:04.21 and 400 free relay, 4:15.60; and Nicholas Battjes, Rodrigo Sosa, Ese Taylor and Shaffer, 200 free relay, 2:09.46;
Wins for the Southwestern girls were: Gianna Bennett, 200 free, 2:17.24 and 100 free, 1:01.38; Jordan Worcester, 200 IM, 2:42.05 and 100 breast, 1:27.65; Rebekah Anderson, 100 fly, 1:15.51; Worcester, Bennett, Anderson and Meredith Webber, 200 medley relay, 2:21.21 and 200 free relay, 2:00.84; and Sarah Schroeder, Taylor Suthard, Blanca Durantez and Jennah Butters, 400 free relay, 5:19.97.
Other top three finishes for the Southwestern boys were: Anderson, second, 200 IM, 2:50.42; Shaffer, second, 50 free, 30.69; Sosa, second, 100 fly, 1:33.84 and second, 100 breast, 1:31.07; Truesdell, second, 500 free, 7:20.13 and third, 200 free, 1:31.61; Taylor, second, 100 back, 1:47.00; Battjes, Shaffer, Sosa and Taylor, second, 200 medley relay, 2:40.84; and Battjes, third, 100 free, 1:10.51.
Other top three finishes for the Southwestern girls were: Suthard, second, 200 free, 2:46.92 and third, 500 free, 7:24.15; Schroeder, second, 500 free, 6:58.94 and second, 100 back, 1:25.11; Anderson, second, 100 breast, 1:29.03; Webber, third, 200 IM, 3:09.10 and third, 100 fly, 1:36.45; Butters, third, 50 free, 34.41; and Schroeder, Suthard, Kaitlyn Deskins and Butters, third, 200 medley relay, 2:39.82.
Southwestern competes at Floyd Central on Saturday.
