Rebs fall to Batesville in first swim meet back from break

Southwestern's swim team kicked off 2013 with a strong meet against Batesville and Shawe Thursday at home.
The Rebels had 13 best times and three individual wins despite losing both team meets. Batesville won the boys meet by a score of 201-87 and the girls meet 184-111.
"For the first meet after Christmas break, which included STOTAN week, we did pretty well," Southwestern coach Shelly Hamilton said. "While we didn't win the meet, Batesville has a very strong program which makes them difficult to beat. We are now starting the process of deciding which events each swimmer will work on for the sectional. We're excited to see what the next few weeks will show us."
Jordan Worcester had a pair of wins for Southwestern. She won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:19.53 and the 100-yard freestyle in 1:02.51. Gianna Bennett had the Rebels' other win, claiming the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:21.24.
Other top three finishes for the Southwestern girls were: Lakin Henderson, second, 50 free, 29.41 and third, 100 breaststroke, 1:23.08; Rebekah Anderson, second, 500 free, 6:54.60 and third, 200 free, 2;35.88; Worcester, Bennett, Henderson and Meredith Webber, second, 200 medley relay, 2:16.65 and second, 400 free relay, 4:30.62; Bennett, third, 200 IM, 2:37.11; and Zaynah Watson, Cassidy Weaver, Sara Judge and Anderson, third, 200 free relay, 2:14.31.
Top finishes for the Southwestern boys were: Nathan Anderson, second, 200 free, 2:21.48 and third, 100 back, 1:13.24; Mitchel Swafford, second, 200 IM, 2:33.66 and second, 100 fly, 1:07.35; Zachary Hamilton, second, 100 breast, 1:18.98; Anderson, Hamilton, Swafford and Travis Higham, second, 200 medley relay, 2:04.50; Dylan Truesdell, third, 200 free, 2:31.96; Nicholas Battjes, third, 500 free, 7:21.47; Jacob Grayson, Ryan Furnish, Hamilton and Truesdell, third, 200 free relay, 1:57.83; and Swafford, Higham, Grayson and Anderson, third, 400 free relay, 4:44.33.
Shawe's Liz Grote, her team's only participant, won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:07.70. She was also second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:29.27.
