Southwestern hung tough with Class A No. 11 New Washington for a half before falling 69-42 in girls basketball Thursday at home.
The Lady Rebels trailed 21-14 after one quarter and 36-26 at halftime. Southwestern had several chances to get closer early in the third quarter but the shots didn't fall and New Washington took advantage.
The Mustangs (7-2) eased out 54-40 after three quarters then blew away their hosts 15-2 in the final frame for the 27-point margin.
"New Washington shot incredibly well in the first half. I'd be surprised if they weren't in the 70s," Southwestern coach Kenny Garrett said. "But we were right with them at the half. We had about three or four close shots in the third quarter and if those had fallen it might have been a four-point game."
Southwestern's Cheyenne McKinley scored all 12 of her points in the first half while Debbie Hardy had 12 points, a new career-high.
Caroline Ricks led four New Washington players in double-figures with 18 points. Kriston Sarver had 17 points, Ashley Johnson scored 15 and Courtney Amick added 10.
Garrett was very complimentary of New Washington but also noted that his team needs to shore up some of its own weaknesses.
"New Washington had about 18 or 20 offensive rebounds. We have to do a better job in there," Garrett said. "I'm old school I guess but I can't understand how you can't get more excited about playing a team like New Washington. We still have several goals, such as winning the conference and the sectional and those are still in play, but we have to get more mental toughness. We're not a physical team and other teams know that. We need to get tougher."
Southwestern, now 2-7 on the season, hosts Oldenburg Academy Thursday.
