DETRIOT, Mich. - A pair of penalties on Steve David cost the Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison two victories on the first day of competition at the 104th APBA Gold Cup in Detroit on Saturday. David was leading Heat 1B by a quarter of a lap when he clipped a buoy exiting turn two of the third lap and incurred a one-lap penalty. He finished third. In Heat 2B, David again had a large lead when he was hit with a one-lap penalty for veering out two lanes. This time he finished fourth. David did not quibble with either penalty and took responsiblity. "I got unhooked and skipped out," David said. "It's just something that happens." The end result of the penalties is that David sits in sixth place in points, outside if the front row for the final. There are two more preliminary heats on Sunday. Jimmy Shane won both of his heats in dominating fashion aboard the Graham Trucking. Mike Webster and Kip Brown won the other two heats For Webster, who flipped on this same river a year ago, the win was the first of his Unlimited career. "This just means so much to the team," Webster said. "It's hard not to get choked up." Webster's win came in Heat 1B, which had to be re-run after Ryan Mallow blew over his Jarvis Restoration boat in front of the Detroit Yacht Club, the same place Webster went over last year. The boat appeared to have minimal damage but Mallow was going to stay in a local hospital for "precautionary" reasons. Heats 3 and 4 of the Gold Cup will be run Sunday afternoon with Final Heat set for 4 p.m.
