Shawe Memorial swept all three singles matches to score a 3-2 win over Milan on the road in the Hilltoppers' girls tennis season opener.

Senior Taylor Grote and freshmen Claire Higgins and Megan Hill each won their singles matches in straight sets to clinch the team victory.

Grote defeated Milan's Issy Ortt 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles while Higgins beat Autumn Bowling 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Hill defeated Emily Seaver 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

"I am very pleased with our singles players tonight for pulling though to get us the victory," Shawe coach Steve Sims said. "We are a very young team this year and for two freshmen to pull out wins in their first high school tennis match was pretty impressive. Taylor Grote didn't play her best tennis tonight, but she did just enough to help us get a team victory."

Both doubles teams failed to score wins but each played well. Lauren Cieslinski and Carson Hambrick lost to Alexis Owens and Tapanga Gauck 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles. Jenna Armstrong and Hannah Storm fell 6-2, 6-1 to Alexis Amberger and Brooke Bowling at No. 2.

"Our doubles will be a work in progress this year," Sims said. "I was very happy to see the progression that Carson and Lauren made throughout the match.

"This is our first match of the season. We have a lot of work to do but I like the potential I saw tonight for us to have a great season."

Shawe, now 1-0, hosts Austin today.
