Trimble County didn't find out about its volleyball match with Shawe until two hours before game time on Wednesday. But the Raiders recovered from that to beat the Hilltoppers in what proved to be three tight games in Madison.
All three games were played in the 20s with Trimble rallying late and each for the 3-0 win. The final score was 25-22, 25-20, 25-23.
"Shawe was very scrappy and dug up a lot of our attacks. Along with our poor serve reception that kept the games close," Trimble coach Ruth Staples said. "However, as I always say, 'a win is a win,' and we played well enough with strong serves and front row blocks and kills late in each game to win. It seems like when the game is close, the girls pull together to win when they need to."
Paige Black had a monster game for the Raiders, collecting 16 kills, 12 blocks and 24 digs. The senior was also 12-of-13 serving with five aces and 19-for-22 in serve receptions.
Kayla Greenwood had 14 kills, 13 digs, seven blocks and was 9-for-9 serving with two kills for Trimble. Kayla Baker was 9-for-11 serving with three aces, seven kills, 16 digs and two blocks, and Sydney Weaver was 15-for-16 serving with three aces, 15-for-18 in serve receptions, four kills, three sets, 28 digs and a block.
Raven Hudson was 7-for-8 serving, 22-of-23 setting and 13 digs, Shelbe Black was 5-for-6 serving with a kill and 13 digs, and Kate Staples was 4-for-4 serving with an ace, 15-for-15 setting and three digs for Trimble.
For Shawe, Bailey Wolf was 8-for-9 attacking with a kill, 20-for-25 passing and had a block. Carson Hambrick was 9-for-10 setting and 24-for-29 passing, Katelyn Moore was 5-for-5 attacking with three kills and 3-for-3 serving, McKay Burdette was 14-for-15 setting and 5-for-5 serving with an ace, Lauren Cielinski was 3-for-5 hitting with a kill, and EmaLee Copeland was 20-for-26 passing.
Trimble, now 12-9 on the season, travels to Williamstown today. Shawe, now 0-12, competes in the Southwestern Invitational on Saturday.
