Shawe Memorial got a career performance from Maddie Waller and an impressive first-half team performance in a 64-43 loss to South Decatur on the road Saturday.
Waller was 10-for-16 from the floor for 21 points and added six rebounds as the Hilltoppers trailed only 35-31 at halftime. The 31 points were four more than Shawe averages for an entire game.
"We played the best basketball we have played all year in the first half," Shawe coach Camille Deuser said. "The second half we just had a hard time hitting shots. Maddie Waller really stepped up and played like she is capable of playing. We need her to continue playing like that because it takes pressure off Taylor Grote."
Grote, Shawe's leading scorer on the season, finished with eight points and Jenna Armstrong had seven points and four assists. Megan Goebel scored four points to go with five rebounds and Amelia Koehler had three points.
"Megan Goebel came off the bench and played really good physical defense down low," Deuser said. "We are moving in the right direction and I am really excited about the way we are playing right now."
Shawe, now 4-13 on the season, hosts Jac-Cen-Del on Tuesday.
