NEW CASTLE, Ky. - Host Henry County pulled away from a three-point lead at halftime to pound visiting Carroll County 61-47 in boys' basketball Tuesday in New Castle.
The Panthers battled back against the taller and quicker Wildcats in the second quarter after Henry County led 16-10 at the first quarter break. The teams were tied in the final seconds of the first half before Henry took a 31-28 lead into halftime thanks to a long buzzer beater by guard Chase Howard.
Henry County carried that momentum over into the second half built a lead in the third quarter the hosts would never surrender. The Wildcats outscored the Panthers 16-10 during the third period and then slammed the door shut 14-9 over the final eight minutes for the 14 point win.
"We didn't play with the energy we needed during tonight's game," Carroll County head coach Carroll Yager said. "Give Henry County credit, though, they're good. They're 3-0 in the district and aiming for the number one seed."
Yager hoped the Panthers could push the ball up and down the floor and play pressure defense against their district rivals. However, that plan backfired against the bigger and quicker Wildcats.
"We were just flat," Yager said. "I don't know whether it was coming off the (double-overtime loss) Owen County game."
Henry County used its balanced scoring, height advantage and quickness to build the early lead and then hold off Carroll's first half comeback. As the game wore on Henry continuously pounded the ball inside.
The Panthers were within a point of the Wildcats early in the third quarter when a runout basket by guard Austin Crowell got Carroll to within 39-38. However, that was as close as the Panthers got as Henry pounded the ball inside to center James Wundrak to go on a 9-0 run for a 47-38 cushion heading into the final period.
Wundrak led all scorers with 16 points while Austin Young and Howard scored 14 points each for Henry.
Jacob Wise scored 14 points to lead the Panthers while Dakota Corbin and Crowell added nine each and Isiah Hogan scored eight.
The Panthers return to action Friday at Gallatin County in the first game of a boys-girls varsity doubleheader starting at 6 p.m.
