Having a blast with barbeque

Todd Shanks of Cincinnati prepares racks of babyback pork ribs during last year’s Ribberfest celebration. This year’s Ribberfest will be Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16-17. Sure, your barbeque may be a hit at summer cookouts with friends, but has it been pitted against other backyard chefs who take their cooking just as seriously?

The Madison Courier Backyard BBQ Blast - the amateur competition at the Madison Ribberfest - will give area residents and out-of-towners a chance to show off their skills.

The competition will kick off a weekend of barbeque cooking, tasting and judging at the two-day festival, which runs next Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16-17.

Other barbeque competitions include the Kidz-Q and the main event, the professional Kansas City Barbeque Society competition. Both are scheduled for Saturday.

Cooks for all events will set up on Vaughn Drive, as a variety of other festivities are scheduled for Bicentennial Park.

Nearly 50 teams have signed up for the amateur competition, which will draw participants from Madison and areas in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio and even Michigan. Registration is open at a cost of $25 per team up until the day of the event. Forms are available at www.madisonribberfest.com.

Kathy Ayers, festival coordinator, said the number of teams registered already is a record for the event.

"That's the biggest field we've had ever, and we're not even there yet," she said.

The competition judging takes place at 7 p.m. Friday in the Brown Gym. The day of the competition, participants can set up their rigs at 6 a.m. on Vaughn. They must follow health and fire code guidelines and cannot use electricity.

The categories include ribs, pork, beef, poultry, game and other meats (rabbit, goat, venison, etc). Special prizes will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners in each category, along with best original sauce, best original spice rub and best team awards.

New this year, The Madison Courier has renamed the team spirit award to honor former production manager Jack Ulery, who died in 2012.

Ulery worked for the paper from 1998 to 2012.

Curt Jacobs, Madison Courier general manager, said the camaraderie of the cooking competition really embodied Ulery's personality. Jacobs said Ulery often cooked ribs for the entire newspaper staff during Ribberfest.

"That's just Jack's type of event," Jacobs said.

The 60 professional entrants will be judged in categories of chicken, pork, ribs, beef brisket, sauce, anything butt and dessert.

The judging begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the Brown Gym.

Teams will compete for more than $13,000 in cash prizes. The money will be awarded to the top winners in sauce, anything butt and dessert, as well as grand champions and reserve grand champions for the remaining categories.

The grand champion winner of the competition also may qualify for the American Royale and Jack Daniels barbeque competitions later this year.

The KCBS schedule is set up months in advance, and this year's lineup shows several local and state competitions, as well as teams from Alabama and Pennsylvania.

"Anybody from those areas that learn about (Ribberfest) learn about Madison, and ultimately that's our goal is to make sure that Madison is known," Ayers said.

This year's Kidz-Q will feature an Italian sausage challenge.

Each participant will receive a pound of the meat and then cook and serve the item on their own without help from parents or adults.

Ayers said the competition teaches young chefs everything from grill technique to time management and presentation.

"They have to set up a tray to go to the judges just like the KCBS people do," she said.

The competition will be broken down into two age groups, those 8 to 11 and then 12 to 15. This year's event is sponsored by Kroger.

The cooking begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday and judging starts at 11 a.m. in the Brown Gym.

First-place winner will receive a $200 cash prize, while second place will receive $100.

The participants must use charcoal, which will be ignited by the judges or the parents.
