Craig Philipp
Hanover prof joins council

Brandi Baldwin
Courier Staff Writer

Craig Philipp, an assistant professor of chemistry at Hanover College, has joined the Hanover Town Council. He will replace Ken Gibson, who resigned when he moved out of the Hanover area.

"I do love participating," Philipp said. "When I was asked, I didn't think twice about it."

Philipp worked for several years as a flavor chemist for several companies in Florida including Tropicana before moving to Hanover to teach.

"I wanted to get into academia," Philipp said. "I took this job to give back, and this is one more way I can do that."

At the college, he's used his real-world experience to help his students attain the experience necessary to succeed in their chosen field. He said many of the chemists who came into the business didn't have the skills necessary to do the job, and Philipp wants to make sure his students don't have this problem.

"I know what they need to know," Philipp said.

All of the labs he teaches incorporate things he did while in business. Instead of just working with chemicals, he gave his students two cans of spray paint and told them to figure out how they were the same or different. In another lab, he had them figure out how much vitamin C was in a bottle of orange juice.

"Just trying to make labs relevant is the answer to the question," Philipp said.

Philipp's love of science came from his father, who was also a chemist.

"He did experiments for us," Philipp said. "He blew things up mostly. He made science fun."

During his time on the council, Philipp said he hopes to find a way to bring several medium-sized businesses to the area and to help make Hanover a cleaner, more aesthetic place to live.

"I'm not the only one who thinks this," Philipp said.

In his free time, Philipp said, he plays the bass guitar in a band called The Blue Devils, which performs in Louisville and at the Electric Lady.

Philipp has played the guitar since he was 12.

"I just grew up in a musical family," said Philipp, who taught himself to play.

He also is the coach of the Hanover College rugby club and is the adviser for the swim club.

His wife, Stephanie, taught at Madison Consolidated High School last year and will be working on getting her doctorate in science education this year. He has three children from elementary to high school age at Southwestern.
