By Courier Staff Report
The Southern Indiana Shooters remained alive in the 2002 15-and-under AAU girls basketball nationals Tuesday, with a convincing 83-63 win over the North Carolina Elite in Overland Park, Kan.
The Shooters, who feature a pair of Madison juniors in Brittany Myers and Emily Strandmark, now must win two games each day for the rest of the week to earn a championship berth.
The two Cubs played a big part in the Shooters’ lopsided win. Myers, who has led the team in scoring the past three games, exploded for a game-high 18 points, including three 3-pointers and a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line.
Strandmark scored just two points, going 2-for-2 from the line, but played most of the game and provided much needed defense.
The 83 points was an unusual outburst for the Shooters, who average around 60 points-a-game. But the Elite pressed all 36 minutes and paid the price as Southern Indiana converted on several breakaway chances.
New Albany’s Stephanie Lynch, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, scored 13 points while Louisville Assumption freshman Amber Norton added 10.
The Shooters took to the floor this morning, taking on the second-ranked team in the nation, the Georgia Black Magic, at 8 a.m. A win in that game, and Southern Indiana plays at 3:30 p.m. today.
The Magic were an upset victim of the Dayton Lady Hoop Stars, the same team that knocked off the Shooters in pool play. Dayton, whom Southern Indiana defeated twice earlier this season, whipped Georgia 69-51.
The Shooters go into action today without two of their main cogs. Jeffersonville’s Samantha Johnson, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, sprained her Achilles’ tendon in a game Monday. North Harrison sophomore Tara Miller, the team’s starter at small forward, left the team to watch her brother’s AAU team in the nationals in Orlando, Fla.
