Big win over Greensburg could be costly.
Courier Staff Report
Madison whipped Greensburg 56-31 to go over the .500 mark on the season Saturday, but the win may have been a costly one for the Cubs.
Leading scorer and junior all-star candidate Brittany Myers twisted her ankle on a runner in the lane on the final play of the third quarter, forcing her to the bench. Preliminary reports showed no break on Myers’ ankle, but the 5-foot-9 guard is almost certainly out for Madison’s next game at Providence Thursday.
Even without Myers, the Cubs (9-8) had little trouble in dusting off host Greensburg. Madison led 27-20 at halftime, but held the Pirates to just four points in the third quarter en route to a 44-24 fourth quarter lead. The Cubs out-scored Greensburg 12-7 in the final stanza.
It was the second straight game that Madison turned a close game into a rout in the second half. Last Tuesday, Madison led Silver Creek by just five before blowing the Dragons out in the second half.
Myers still finished with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting and added five rebounds. Emily Strandmark hit three 3-pointers and added 13 points while Kara Heady scored nine points. Five-foot-seven sophomore guard Brittany Boldery continues to display her uncanny ability to get rebounds, picking up a career-high 12.
Madison will face a potential sectional opponent at Providence Thursday and its final Hoosier Hills Conference game at Columbus East Saturday.
