— Madison’s Brittany Myers has been named a finalist for Indiana’s 2003 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.
One of 20 nominees, Myers will be honored at halftime of the Indianapolis Colts-Houston Texans football game at the RCA Dome Sunday.
Out of the 20 finalists, two will be selected to represent Indiana in national competition. Out of the 102 state finalists, one male and one female athlete will earn the 2003 High School Heisman Award.
Myers, a senior at Madison, has excelled in three sports most not-ably basketball, where the 5-foot-9 guard is considered one of the best players in the state. She was also a member of Madison’s 2002 state finalist golf team and is a on the track & field team. Myers is also one of the top students in her class.

— Madison sixth grader Jordan Leach has been honored by the Southern Indiana Babe Ruth Baseball League as a 12-year-old All-Star in the Cal Ripken Division.
Leach was a member of Madison’s 12-year old All-Star team that was the runner-up at the district tournament in Columbus and played in the regional at Shelbyville. He was selected for his hustle, respect for the rules, leadership, sportsmanship and outstanding play.
One of 200 award winners from southern Indiana between the ages of 9 and 18, Leach received a plaque and a T-shirt at a banquet in Bloomington.

— Madison varsity swim coach Linda Lawrence has announced the beginning of practice for the 2003-04 season.
The girls varsity swimming and diving team will begin practice Monday at the Madison Junior High School pool. Practice will be daily from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Physicals are required to attend practice.
Interested girls should report to the pool Monday with swim suit and towel.

— Madison varsity wrestling coach Ray Black Jr. has announced the beginning of practice for the 2003-04 season.
The team’s first practice will be in the mat room after school on Monday. The team, which posted a 27-4 record last year and has eight returning seniors, is open to all ninth through 12th graders. All athletes must have a copy of their physical form on file.
Madison’s first meet will be Nov. 22 at the New Washington Invitational.

— Madison’s first round sectional football game with the Shelbyville Golden Bears will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Shelbyville.
Tickets will cost $5 at the gate. There will be no presales in Madison.
The coin toss is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., player introductions at 7:20, the National Anthem at 7:25 with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m. sharp.
Both schools will be on fall break.

— The City of Madison Parks Department is holding a Coach’s Organizational meeting for Little League Basketball.
The meeting will be Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Brown Gym downtown. Anyone interested in coaching Little League Basketball should attend this meeting.

—Forms for fourth, fifth and sixth grade boys and girls basketball are now available at area schools.

— Sign-ups for each of the Lide White Boys & Girls Club basketball leagues are now open to the public.
Leagues offered are: Instructional (4-yard old boys and girls), Micro (kindergarten and first grade boys and girls), Boys Biddy (second grade boys), Girls Biddy (second and third grade girls), and Boys Intermediate (third grade boys).

— Racquetball Leagues are now forming at the Lide White Boys & Girls Club.
Persons interested should call the Club and give their name, phone number and ranking as an “A,” “B,” “C” or “D” level player. The league will begin Oct. 27 and run through Dec. 20. The cost is $5 per week.
