Salem duo lifts Hanover women in opener 68-65

Courier Staff Report

Hanover College’s women got their 2003-04 season off to a successful start Friday night, beating St. Mary’s College 68-65 in the opening round of the Rose-Hulman Tip-Off Classic At Hulbert Arena in Terre Haute.

The Panthers built a 38-30 lead by halftime and then hung on for the three-point win as both teams shot below 40 percent for the game.

Hanover got a big game from its Salem connection as former Lions Laura Little and Angela Newkirk combined for 36 points, 21 rebounds and six assists.

Little, a 5-foot-8 junior forward, led all players with 24 points and 13 rebounds including 8-for-14 shooting from the field while Newkirk, a sophomore forward, had 12 points, eight boards and four assists.

The only other double-digit scorer for Hanover was Tessa Bair, a 5-foot-6 junior guard from Tipton, who had a dozen points, four assists and three steals.

St. Mary’s was led by Emily Creachbaum’s 18 points while Bridget Boyce added 16.

Hanover shot only 36.8 percent from the field (21-of-57), but St. Mary’s struggled even more, hitting just 22-of-70 for 31.4 percent. Hanover out-rebounded St. Mary’s 47-45, but made seven more turnovers and had just seven steals to 17 by St. Mary’s.

Former Switzerland County standout Angie Thieman saw her first college action in the opener, scoring on a layup with 9:03 left in the second half that put Hanover up 52-50. Thieman, a freshman guard, had two points and one rebound in five minutes of action.

Hanover (1-0) plays Rose-Hulman at 4 p.m. today.
