Bryan Bullington had his second impressive outing in a row, allowing one earned run in five innings in the Indianapolis Indians' 6-4 victory over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Sunday.
Bullington, a 1999 Madison graduate, has rebounded from a rough start to the season to go 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts this week. The performance has earned Bullington International League's Pitcher of the Week honors.
Bullington started the season losing his first five decisions and watched his ERA soar to 8.04. He has won three of four decisions since with an impressive 2.80 ERA over that span. He is now 3-6 with a 5.68 ERA overall.
"Bryan had a rough start to the season, but he has continued to fight and battle," Indians pitching coach Ray Searage said. "Bryan's work ethic is a true example to the younger guys in our clubhouse. He's the type of guy who is always doing more than we ask of him."
On Sunday, Bullington benefited from an early lead. The Indians (25-26) got off to a quick start when Andrew McCutchen blasted a double to right field and scored on a single by Kevin Thompson in the first inning. Thompson then moved to third on a throwing error and trotted home on an infield single by Steve Pearce.
Pearce drove in another run in the third inning on a squeeze bunt, which plated McCutchen, who led off the inning with his second two-bagger. McCutchen later scored his third run of the game, when he and Thompson came home on a throwing error by Yankees reliever Heath Phillips in the seventh inning.
Bullington took advantage of the offense, allowing two runs - one earned - on six hits while striking out seven and walking two. The Yankees scored two runs early on singles by Jason Lane in the first and Wilson Betemit in the second.
"We are continuing to tweak Bryan's delivery," Searage said. "With a fastball at 88 to 91 (mph), Bryan has less margin for error. He must continue to mix his off-speed pitches and keep the ball down in the strike zone. He's done both of those things well over these past two starts."
The 27-year-old Bullington is in his sixth season with the Pittsburgh organization after being selected by the Pirates in the first round (first overall) of the 2002 draft.
Bullington's next scheduled start is Friday at home against Toledo.
