Southwestern's Brianna Howard named to Indiana's elite team in girls basketball.
Indiana All-Star

By David Campbell, Courier Staff Writer

Southwestern fans have long felt that Brianna Howard was one of the best players in the state. Now they know they were right.

Howard, the school’s all-time leader in both scoring and steals, reached the pinnacle of Indiana high school basketball Sunday, when she was named to the Indiana girls All-Star basketball team.

Howard will suit up in the white and red uniform of Indiana in a pair of games against the Kentucky All-Stars June 15 and 22. Making the moment even more special is the fact that Howard’s high school coach, Donna Cheatham, will be calling the shots from the bench as Indiana’s head coach.

Both Howard and Cheatham are fresh off winning the Class 2 A State championship earlier this month — Southwestern’s first state title in any sport boys or girls.

Joining Howard on the Indiana team are the top high school seniors in Indiana, led by Miss Basketball Shanna Zolman of Wawasee.

All Zolman has done in four years of high school is lead the state in scoring each season and finish less than 100 points from Damon Bailey’s all-time Indiana scoring record for boys or girls.

The University of Tennessee-bound Zolman averaged 33.8 points per game this past season and is a finalist for the Naismith National High School Player of the Year award.

Also named to the 13-player squad is Jennings County’s Jenny Pfeiffer, who has signed with the University of Kentucky and Indianapolis Cathedral’s Sharika Webb and Jessica Wright. The latter pair should be familiar to Courierarea fans as both Webb and Wright were instrumental in Cathedral’s win over Madison in the 1999 Class 3A Semistate finals as freshman.

Zolman and Webb are the main guns for an Indiana team that figures to score a ton of points. But Cheatham, the winningest coach in Indiana girls high school basketball history, believes her team will be able to play a little defense in the two games with Kentucky.

“If I can get the defensive end going from them to make it a little tougher for Kentucky to put points on the board, we’re going to be hard to match up with,” Cheatham said.

Howard is the only member of the all-star team who has not yet committed to a college, but Cheatham noted her star senior is getting close.

The Rebels’ leading scorer all four years at Southwestern, Howard could be a dark horse on the All-Star team.

“Brianna’s defense is excellent,” Cheatham said. “Even though she’s only 5-8, I’ve played her against many good 6-footers or 6-1 players. One-on-one, Brianna will take it right to you. You’re going to have to be a heck of a defensive player to keep her from scoring.”

Along with Howard and Cheatham, junior Catherine Graham will also join in the all-star fun. Graham has been named to the Junior All-Star team and will take part in a game against the seniors June 12, possibly in Bloomington.

The juniors and seniors will face off in two boys/girls doubleheaders, the first taking place June 12 and the second June 19 in Wawasee. The Indiana/Kentucky All-Star Series will be June 15 in Owensboro, Ky., and June 22 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

In addition to those four games, Howard and Cheatham will also take part in the Reebok North/South All-Star Classic April 14 in New Albany. Howard will play for the South team with Cheatham acting as the South head coach.
